The Solo Handyman Story

Let me set the scene for you: the year is 2019, and I set out to start my handyman business. I came to this business with a lot of construction knowledge as a Journeyman Carpenter and a project manager, so I thought I knew what I was doing – I did not. Through years of running my business I went through a lot of ups and downs and made some significant mistakes along the way.

Probably my biggest mistake was trying to grow my business by hiring employees and taking on larger remodeling projects. I hired friends, convinced subtrades from my project management days to work with me and bought expensive software. With little to no systemization and a ‘hustle through it’ mindset, I crashed and burned. My little profitable solo handyman business that brought me so much joy turned into mess with 50K in debt, no money in my checking account, a half finished project, and a failed business.

After the dust settled, I knew things had to change. I got to work reviving my little handyman business. I focused on small projects only, systemized the hell out of every aspect and approached things from an analytical point of view. Fast forward to today and I have a great business that provides me with a high income, and contingencies just in case.

My mission is to equip you with expert knowledge and practical tools to help you find a community, achieve financial and operational efficiency in your handyman business, and build wealth, all without the burden of employees, subcontractors, or angry clients.

The goal of The Solo Handyman is to provide a wealth of resources including tips, and strategies tailored for solo handy-people. Let’s get your handyman business where it needs to be to support your family, reduce your stress, protect your health and make sure you don’t need to call your old boss and ask for your job back.

Your Essential Guide To A Better BUSINESS

Why ‘The Solo handyman’?

If you’ve read The E-Myth, or any of the thousands of similar business books you know the story: solo guy starts a business, gets overwhelmed doing it all himself, tries to grow, burns out, and eventually just goes back to getting a job because it’s easier.

The takeaway? Build systems. Hire people. Scale up. Get yourself out of the day-to-day.

For me, it’s not the path to freedom in the handyman space, and it might be close to impossible to do in this industry.
I’m not against growth. I just think there’s another path that doesn’t involve managing a crew, dealing with payroll, or spending your days stuck in meetings and spreadsheets. I believe you can build a solid, profitable, low-stress business — and still stay solo.

That’s what The Solo Handyman is all about. It’s for people like me (and maybe you) who want to work smart, earn well, and keep life simple. No employees. No chaos. Just a business that fits the kind of life you actually want to live.

So if you’ve ever felt like growing your business has to mean hiring — but that never really sat right with you — you’re in the right place.

I’m Blake. I run a solo handyman business in North Vancouver, and I’m building The Solo Handyman. My goal? To help other solo tradespeople earn more, stress less, and build a life they actually enjoy.

Let’s prove you don’t need a a bunch of people on your payroll to build something great.
